I try to eat healthy. A variety of natural veggies and fruits is essential to keep our bodies feeling their best. But it’s tough for me to plan, shop, and prepare an array of good quality foods into meals. So when there is a natural food supplement I can easily store and include in a shake or meal I am always excited to give it a shot!
What is it?
Nopal Cactus (Prickly Pear) pads are dried and then ground to a fine powder. This allows for easy storage and you can enjoy the health benefits of cactus without having to prepare, clean, or cook anything! This makes it an easy way to add a serious nutritional punch into food or shakes. Or you can enjoy the powder on its own with water if you need a healthy pick me up.
Why I tried it…
Nopal boasts a variety of weight loss and health benefits including metabolism efficiency. It is packed with fiber (just a warning this powder is comparable to Metamucil – so just be mindful of your intake because the fiber will naturally clear you out – if you know what I mean). This fiber really helps to satiate appetite and Nopal’s contents aids in reducing the absorption of sugars and fats.
Nopal also contains a slew of other vitamins and nutrients including Vitamins A, C, K, B6, Riboflavin, Phytochemicals, Polysaccharides which are great for overall health benefits.
How I used this
I consumed one scoop of this product every morning for seven days. I found it easiest to consume in a shake. I did drink the powder with water and I wasn’t a huge fan of the taste/ texture.
Shake Recipe:
½ banana
½ cup almond milk
½ cup plain Greek yogurt
1 scoop protein powder
1 scoop cactus powder
Handful of blueberries
Large handful of spinach
The satchel came with a scoop to measure out a serving of the fine, greenish powder. There is no distinct smell and when I tasted it alone, the product was bland to me. Not bad, just a bit boring with a grainy texture that was hard to dissolve in water alone. For this reason I primarily ate this powder as a booster in shakes.
Pricing
4 oz for $12.49 – that is 37 servings! That works out to $0.34 per serving.
There are many Nopal powders to choose from and some are cheaper. Just make sure you take a look at the ingredients and reviews before purchasing.
Note: To save additional money, you can make this powder yourself by drying and grinding Nopal Catctus pads.
Results
For the first two days I couldn’t tell much difference, but I realized I ate less food throughout the day. I believe this was due to feeling fuller from breakfast and my digestion was very regular and healthy during the week.
After the seven days of consuming the powder, I stopped using the powder for a couple of days. I found that I was craving the shake! Because of the ease of use, and health benefits I will continue to use.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Easy to use and store to use at your leisure
- An easy, neutral add to food or shakes
- Boost of vitamins and minerals
- Cost per serving is low
Cons:
- Flavor is just bland alone, so I felt it needed to be mixed with something else
- Not really a con – I had to make sure to not take too much because the fiber seemed to be quite effective!
